This year was quite a successful one in terms of digital music sales. More than a billion tracks for the year through December 14 were provided by legal music services, a total which represents an increase by 28 % from the same period in 2007, according to a Nielsen SoundScan report.
Compared with the sales of 2007 (783 million tracks sold), this year downloads scored 1.001 billion and still going. By the end of the year it’s estimated that about 1.04 billion songs will be downloaded.
The Top 200 digital tracks for 2008 through December 14 represents 17 % of all music sales (171 million to be more precise) a spokeswoman confirmed.
“In April 2008, we projected that digital track sales would break the 1 billion sales mark for the year,” she pointed out. “That projection was accurate, and we still have two sales weeks remaining in the year.
